FAQ about child ophthalmology
There are many fallacies in modern society about the eye health of young patients. Professionals at the “New Vision” clinic, a team of child ophthalmologists, answer frequently asked questions.
When should you and your child see an ophthalmologist?
Child ophthalmologist at the “New Vision” center can assess the eye condition of even the youngest patients. The global ophthalmology practice recommends carrying out the detail examination of eyes when a child reaches 2-3 years of age.
Are the results of medical check-ups carried out in a kindergarten and school sufficiently reliable when no vision problem is reported?
The aim of prophylactic medical check-ups carried out in kindergarten and schools is to detect distinct disorders, pathology and advanced diseases. Therefore, the early stages of important conditions, such as amblyopia, strabismus, astigmatism, retinoblastoma, etc. cannot be detected during prophylactic medical check-ups. On the basis of contemporary global experience, we recommend carrying out a detailed examination of a child’s vision system every year, to ensure the timely diagnosis of all eye diseases and their treatment by applying modern methods.
What issues should be addressed by parents?
Young patients do not complain of eye problems, so parents should be very attentive if:
- their child rubs his/her eyes often;
- narrows a lid of one eye being outside;
- child does not follow a moving object;
- child’s eyes get red often;
- child’s eye diverges to any side, even if this occurs impermanently;
- child bends or turns his/her head when looking ahead;
- child’s eyes twitch, even if this occurs impermanently;
- child has been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus;
- the appearance of right eye differs from the left according to certain parameters (size, external appearance, diameter of pupils);
- in flash photo one eye is reddish and the other white;
- your child has experienced eye trauma.
If you have noticed any of the above mentioned symptoms in your child, you should meet with a child ophthalmologist at our clinic.
Is it possible to check the vision of a child still unable to talk?
This is possible, of course. We at the “New Vision” clinic among other available approaches have generally accepted and reliable Lea and Cardiff tests, which allow us to assess the sharpness of vision in children of any age, irrespective of the ability of the young patient to talk.
Is it necessary to use eye drops during diagnostic examination of a child’s vision?
The use of pupil dilating eye-drops is required for the appropriate assessment of the optical characteristics of eyes and detailed examination of eye-ground (retina and optical nerve). We at the “New Vision” center use special drops, which practically do not irritate eyes and do not cause allergic and adverse reactions. Children need not avoid the load on eyes at school the next day after such examination.
Child experiences difficulty in working at short distance. He complains of eye pain and tiredness, as well as headache. Are these complaints related with vision?
Generally, yes. Commonly such complaints have been associated with latent long-sightedness, short-sightedness and astigmatism. An examination carried out by a child ophthalmologist is required for your child in such case.
Can a child grow out of strabismus?
No, this is not possible. If strabismus is untreated timely, it will subsequently develop into severe and irreversible disorder of the entire vision system of a child. Disturbed vision will result in limited life and professional activities of a young person. The team of professionals at our clinic can diagnose early strabismus, and treat this disorder even in the youngest patient.
Glasses have been prescribed for a child. Is this prescription life-long? Can the glasses be harmful for a child?
If a child suffers from the disorder of optic power of eyes (long-sightedness, short-sightedness, astigmatism), glasses are the main treatment; they give the opportunity for a young patient to grow and develop appropriately. In the case of long-sightedness, there is a likelihood that weaker glasses will be needed with age and eventually may not be required at all. If short-sightedness or astigmatism of any degree has been diagnosed for a child, these disorders will be corrected by applying correction with laser after a child reaches adulthood. Our professionals are unrivalled leaders in vision correction using laser.
Is vision correction without surgery possible?
Yes. We at the “New Vision” center have many modern and very effective devices for the treatment of amblyopia, strabismus, long-sightedness, short-sightedness and astigmatism. On the basis of results obtained during diagnostic procedures, child ophthalmologist will prescribe an individual treatment and prophylaxis program for your child.
