Lutein – Reliable Protection for the Eyes

Laser treatment of eye diseases

Proper nutrition is an important factor for healthy eyes. There are two substances essential for vision – lutein and zeaxanthin – which can protect the eyes from artificial and ultraviolet light, thereby preventing the development of other eye diseases.

Lutein is a natural pigment found in leaves, flowers, and fruits in yellow form. Its main function is to absorb light rays and thus protect plants from excessive sun exposure, especially from the most active and harmful ultraviolet spectra – blue and violet.

Not only are lutein and zeaxanthin found in plants, but scientists have also discovered these substances in high concentrations in the eye's macula. Lutein is the only carotenoid that can accumulate in this part of the eye.

The macula is the central part of the retina, 5 mm in diameter, responsible for visual acuity and color perception. Due to the high concentration of lutein, the macula appears yellow, which is why this part of the retina is called the yellow spot.

Lutein accumulating in the eye’s macula acts as a natural filter, blocking aggressive sunlight and preventing it from reaching the retina.

Interestingly, lutein is present in a baby’s diet from birth: relatively large amounts of lutein are found in mother’s milk. Immediately after birth, the baby faces new stress – strong daylight. Without natural protective substances – lutein and zeaxanthin – concentrated daylight would inevitably damage the retina.

Additionally, lutein and zeaxanthin, together with vitamins C, E, and beta-carotene, have antioxidant effects. They protect the body from free radicals – molecules that acidify and destroy cells, provoking various harmful effects and diseases.

The only problem is that lutein is not synthesized in our body; it accumulates only through food. Lutein is most abundant in yellow and green fresh vegetables, as well as leafy greens. The highest amounts of lutein are found in spinach, yellow bell peppers, corn, broccoli, green lettuce leaves, parsley, beans, and peas.

    Vitamin D Slows Eye Aging

Women who consume a high amount of vitamin D are less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease in which the nerve cells of the central, most important areas of the retina (the macula) die.
