Women who consume a high amount of vitamin D are less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease in which the nerve cells of the central, most important areas of the retina (the macula) die. It is the leading cause of blindness in people over 60 years old. AMD affects the part of the eye responsible for focusing vision.
Studies have shown that in women under 75 years old who consumed a lot of vitamin D in their diet, the risk of developing AMD was 59% lower compared to women who practically received no vitamin D from food. Moreover, no connection was found between AMD and vitamin D obtained from UV sunlight.
The main sources of vitamin D are butter, milk, cheese, and other dairy products, as well as egg yolk, fish oil, caviar, parsley, and mushrooms.
