Blepharitis: Care and Treatment

25.06.2014

Dry eye syndrome

Comprehensive eyelid care is quite effective and serves as a treatment method for eyelid inflammation – blepharitis. Until the condition of the eyelid affected by blepharitis improves, the patient should refrain from using cosmetic products and avoid wearing contact lenses for a while. Daily eyelid care for blepharitis may still be necessary even after the disease begins to subside.

When treating blepharitis, warm compresses should be applied to the eyelid three to four times a day for 10–15 minutes. This cleans the eyelid and also relieves discomfort caused by eyelid inflammation.

If dryness is felt in the eyes due to blepharitis, special products purchased at a pharmacy, also called “artificial tears,” can be used. In this case, the basis of treatment will be comprehensive eyelid hygiene.

If the ophthalmologist determines that the patient has severe blepharitis, an antibiotic eye ointment may be prescribed. Prolonged use of eye drops and ointments may cause a blurred vision of nearby objects. However, this sensation passes soon.

For resistant blepharitis, specific treatment is prescribed, usually with oral antibiotics. In such cases, the treatment method depends on the cause of blepharitis.
